The Azalea Lakes Neighborhood Watch Group
Neighborhood Watch

Summer 2011 marks the kick-off of the Neighborhood Watch revitalization in the Azalea Lakes Subdivision. Speaking with older residents, there was at one time a vibrant Neighborhood Watch program active in the subdivision. This effort intends to restore the life to that program.

The push began with a simple call for participation by those who might be interested to meet at the Jones Creek Branch of the EBR Library on July 30, 2011. That first meeting logged 17 households in attendance either by one or both adult members. Just over ten percent of the available households. This was good seed to a necessary program.

The second major effort for the Neighborhood Watch effort was the participation in the "Night Out Against Crime." This annually held event is scheduled for the first Tuesday night in August - August 2nd, this 2011 year. This very short notice - about 36 hours - event marked the neighborhood walk through the area as a show and stand againt crime in the neighborhood. The event culminated with a front yard meeting in the near-middle of the subdivision at the corner of Azalea Lakes and Lakes Iris. Thirty-five households were represented. This participation, even for such short notice, was double our original meeting. This marked a marvelous oportunity for neighbors to meet and greet one another. All streets were represented by several families each. Drinks and snacks were to be had by all. The meeting "program", impromtu chaired by the association president with a tailgate speech, gave a few quick facts about the neighborhood and thanked all the families represented for their participation.

The third major effort was held August 27, 2001 at the Jones Creek Branch Library. Cpl. Randy Aguillard from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office was present to give a presentation on the Neighborhood Watch system. Many questions were asked and answered. Although the turnout was low - ten households represented - the participation was very enthusiastic. Samples of the materials that were available from the officer are available on request. Block Captain volunteers stepped up for two groups. Lake Iris Block Four, Cyril Adams and Tom Douzat and Azalea Lakes Block Two, Carole Grice and Veronica Richardson.

Volunteers for Block Captain for other areas is highly appreciated.

An update from the meeting will soon follow - "stay tuned" to this page for the latest information!!
